First AM Mode Contact

For the first time ever as AF5NP (or previously as WB9RVW), I used the original voice (phone) mode of amplitude modulation (AM), emission type A3E. W0ARM was calling CQ AM roundup on 7.295 MHz and I replied and he gave me a nice 59 signal report.

While chatting, Alan related to me that my FT-450 radio at 100W full power setting would be putting out only 25W power in AM mode, which agrees with the manual:

Most AM guys are running hundreds or even more than 1000W to get around well so I’m pleased to make a contact. Only 165 miles away (south of San Angelo) but still well beyond line of sight.

Actually heard them on lower sideband (LSB) but sounded slightly off. When he said AM I realized it was this uncommon mode so selected that for better clarity.

Confirmed on QRZ, the first of its kind for me. Now that I know it works I may try for more in the future when I hear activity.
