2023 Statistics

Another busy year of HF operation with frequent contacts, often daily.  Band conditions have been fair to good most of the year with some stinkers where best I could do was FT8 digital mode.  With my compromise all-band and inefficient antenna plus a lot of background noise here, the bands have to be fairly good to make decent contacts, specially on lower frequencies.
Activity remained focused on hunting US counties, then adding new states on all bands in CW and phone mode, and, as always, pursuing DX as I find it.

Main accomplishments were working all states (WAS) by phone and adding three more states to the completed counties list. Here is the cumulative summary of achievements (2016 thru 2023)…

On the DX front, confirmed countries year over year as follows:

DX Card Count 2023  2023

 2022 DX Count   2022

The grand total at end of the year is 142 countries with one on 60m that doesn’t count towards DXCC (Cape Verde).  I’m way behind on requesting cards from these foreign countries, so I should have 138 or more.

Domestically no significant changes to the US States award (confirmed via QRZ for all 50 states).   ARRL’s Worked All States (WAS) award does not recognize 60m band so less satisfying. The state tally of all bands and all modes looks like this, year over year:

QRZ States 2023 2023

2022 States Tally 2022

WAS on 80m remains elusive; I got a better (longer– 63ft) antenna up in 2021, but 80m performance hasn’t been notably better than the older 32ft antenna.  Looking to somehow fit an 80m dipole in the yard, which might help if it can be bent into functional shape, hopefully in 2024.

On CW (Morse Code) I already had a WAS CW award via LoTW, but managed this year to get it on a single band (20m)

2023 States Map CW   2023: 50/50 (+0)

2022 States Tally-CW  2022: 50/50

2023 was a good year for phone work (mainly adding counties), but the big thing is that I finally got Alaska and Hawaii confirmed via SSB to achieve WAS phone award.  Now have all 50 states confirmed in QRZ and LoTW:

2023 States Map phone   2023: 50/50 (+2)

2022 States Tally-ph  2022: 48/50

2023 saw fulfillment of this long-term goal of working and confirming all 50 states in LoTW to achieve the Triple Play Award (confirmed all states in CW, phone, and Digital modes).  TPA

At the end of 2023 my QRZ page shows the WAS status by mode and band as follows with 2022 for comparison:

2023 WAS by band 2023

2022 WAS List  2022

2023 was fairly good for hunting US counties as my primary goal.  My year-end total is 2451 confirmed out of 3137 counties (78.1%).   My 2022 tally was Continue reading

2022 Statistics

Another busy year of HF operation with frequent contacts, often daily.  Band conditions have been fair to good most of the year but managed to make quite a few non-FT8 contacts.  With my compromise all-band and inefficient antenna plus a lot of background noise here, the bands have to be fairly good to make decent contacts, specially on lower frequencies.
Activity mainly hunting US counties, then adding new states on all bands in CW and phone mode, and, as always, pursuing DX as I find it.  Here is the cumulative summary of achievements (2016 thru 2022)…

On the DX front, confirmed countries year over year as follows:

  2022 DX Count   2022

DX QSL 2021  2021

The grand total at end of the year is 138 countries with one on 60m that doesn’t count towards DXCC (Cape Verde).  I’m way behind on requesting cards from these foreign countries, so I should have 138 or more.

Domestically I added the 60m band to the US States award (confirmed via QRZ for all 50 states), largely digital mode.   ARRL’s Worked All States (WAS) award does not recognize 60m band so less satisfying. The state tally of all bands and all modes looks like this, year over year:

2022 States Tally 2022

2021 WAS Endorsements 2021

WAS on 80m remains elusive; I got a better (longer– 63ft) antenna up in 2021, but 80m performance hasn’t been notably better than the older 32ft antenna.  Looking to somehow fit an 80m dipole in the yard, which might help if it can be bent into functional shape.

On CW (Morse Code) I finally nabbed Alaska and achieved a true WAS CW award via LoTW:

2022 States Tally-CW  2022: 50/50 (+1)

2021 WAS CW Map 2021: 49/50 (+4)

2021 was a good year for phone work where I now have 48 states confirmed in QRZ and LoTW:

2022 States Tally-ph  2022: 48/50 (+5)

2021 WAS Phone Map 2021: 43/50 (+33)

Only improvement possible going forward is getting Alaska and Hawaii by phone to reach the big long-term goal of working and confirming all 50 states in LoTW to achieve the Triple Play Award (confirmed all states in CW, phone, and Digital modes).  At year’s end I have triple play on 48 states, with digital mode WAS on 8 bands.

At the end of 2022 my QRZ page shows the WAS status by mode and band as follows with 2021 for comparison:

2022 WAS List  2022

  2021 WAS List  2021

2022 was fairly good for hunting US counties as my primary goal.  My year-end total is 2301 confirmed out of 3137 counties (73.4%).   My 2021 tally was Continue reading

2021 Statistics

Another busy year of HF operation with frequent contacts, often daily.  2021 was more like 2019– mostly FT8 digital mode work but this year I added many states by phone (SSB), whereas 2019 added many CW contacts.  Band conditions have been fair most of the year but managed to make quite a few non-FT8 contacts.  Solar cycle 25 is showing signs of life with a few good propagation days already in 2021 so signs of hope for 2022 for more phone and CW contacts.  Here is the cumulative summary of achievements (2016 thru 2021)…

On the DX front, confirmed countries year over year as follows:

DX QSL 2021  2021

2020 DX Count  2020

The grand total at end of the year is 133 countries with one on 60m that doesn’t count towards DXCC (Cape Verde).

Domestically I added the 12m  and 10m bands to Worked All States (WAS) award (confirmed via LoTW on all 50 states), largely digital mode.  Stuck at 46 states on 80m since 2018.   The state tally of all bands and all modes looks like this, year over year:

2021 WAS Endorsements 2021

2020 States Tally  2020

WAS on 80m remains elusive; I got a better (longer– 63ft) antenna up in 2021, but 80m performance hasn’t been notably better than the older 32ft antenna.  That may be due to propagation on lower frequencies being somewhat diminished.

On CW (Morse Code) I have 49 states confirmed on QRZ out of 49 logged (painfully close; need only Alaska):

2021 WAS CW Map 2021: 49/49 (+4)

2020 States Tally-CW 2020: 45/46 (+5)

2021 was a banner year for phone work where I now have 43 states confirmed in QRZ out of 43 worked:

2021 WAS Phone Map 2021: 43/43 (+33)

2020 States Tally-Phone  2020: 10/11 (+1)

Both maps should improve somewhat next year as I hope to do more CW and phone work in 2022, although there is not much more to do to reach the big long-term goal of working and confirming all 50 states in LoTW to achieve the Triple Play Award (confirmed all states in CW, phone, and Digital modes).  At year’s end I have triple play on 43 states, 49 in CW, 43 in SSB, and 50 digital mode (digital mode WAS on 7 bands).

My color-coded LoTW state map shows gray for digital mode only, yellow for digital+CW, and green for all three modes (triple play):

2021 WAS Triple Play Map

2021 (+33 Triple Play)

LoTW States 12-31-20

2020 (+2 Triple Play)

Because I made a lot of progress towards Triple Play and because the higher frequencies opened up a bit, I started posting states by band and mode chart on my QRZ page:

2021 WAS List

2021 was once again good for hunting US counties.  My year-end total is 2102 confirmed out of 3137 counties (67.0%).   My 2020 tally was Continue reading

2020 Statistics

Another busy year of HF operation with contacts almost daily.  2020 was more like 2018– mostly FT8 digital mode work with a smattering of CW and SSB contacts.  Band conditions have been poor most of the year but managed to make some non-FT8 contacts.  Solar cycle 25 is showing signs of life with a few good propagation days already in 2020 so signs of hope for 2021 for more phone and CW contacts.  Here is the cumulative summary of achievements (2016 thru 2020)…

On the DX front, confirmed countries year over year as follows:

2020 DX Count  2020

2019 DX Count   2019

The grand total at end of the year is 128 countries with three on 60m that don’t count towards DXCC (Cape Verde, Denmark, Ghana).

Domestically I added the 15m band to Worked All States (WAS) award (confirmed via LoTW on all 50 states) and am shy only one state on 12m (AK) and 60m (HI).  Stuck at 46 states on 80m since 2018.   The state tally of all bands and all modes looks like this, year over year:

2020 States Tally  2020

QRZ States 2019  2019

Most notable is +18 states on 10m.   Need only Alaska on 12m and 10m; both seem likely in 2021.  WAS on 80m will require a better (longer) antenna, which may happen in 2021.

On CW (Morse Code) I have 45 states confirmed on QRZ out of 46 logged:

2020 States Tally-CW 2020: 45/46 (+5)

2019 States Tally-CW 2019

On phone I now have 10 states confirmed in QRZ out of 11 worked (WA was Echolink so I’m not counting it) :

2020 States Tally-Phone  2020: 10/11 (+1)

2019 States Tally-Phone  2019

Both maps should improve next year as I hope to do more CW and phone work in 2021.

A big long-term goal is to work and confirm all 50 states in LoTW to achieve the Triple Play Award (confirmed all states in CW, phone, and Digital modes).  At year’s end I have triple play on 10 states, 44 in CW, 10 in SSB, and 50 digital mode (digital mode WAS on 5 bands).

My color-coded LoTW state map shows gray for digital mode only, yellow for digital+CW, blue for digital+phone, and green for all three modes (triple play):

LoTW States 12-31-20

2020 (+2 Triple Play)

LoTW 2019  2019

Differences between QRZ maps and the LoTW map is simply that not everybody uses LoTW so I have to work harder to make contacts to get the LoTW QSL.  That and the 60m VA CW contact which LoTW doesn’t recognize for awards.

2020 was once again good for hunting US counties.  My year-end total is 1954 confirmed out of 3137 counties (62.3%).   My 2019 tally was Continue reading
